SummerSlam Main Event John Cena (c) vs. Brock Lesnar - WWE World Heavyweight Championship

By: Lucas Wolfe

Last night on Raw, it was officially confirmed on WWE TV that John Cena will defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Brock Lesnar in the main event of this years SummerSlam. It may not have shocked a whole lot of people, obviously. But, it's now happening.... Three months ago, this wouldn't be the match I would have predicted to main event SummerSlam, but considering the circumstances with Daniel Bryan being injured right now - John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is (for right now) the only big world title match that can have take place.

Three months ago, Daniel Bryan became the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He beat the odds at WrestleMania 30 by defeating Triple H and then went on to win a triple threat match for the World title - involving (then champion) Randy Orton and Batista. It was a great moment for his fans and it was no doubt a great moment for Daniel Bryan himself. Unfortunately, two months ago, Daniel Bryan suffered a neck injury, needing surgery.... Later having to give up the World Heavyweight Championship.... If this were to never happen, I think, Daniel Bryan and Brock Lesnar would probably be the main event at this years SummerSlam.

Since there was no longer a world champion walking around, WWE put an eight man ladder match for the world title in the main event. Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton, Kane, Cesaro, Roman Reigns, John Cena, Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio all competed in the match. John Cena ended up being the one to climb the ladder and retrieve the two big shiny gold world titles. Obviously, there wasn't a lot of love for John Cena winning his 15th world championship in his near 10 year run at the top. Honestly, John Cena winning was "best for business"... I do think because some recent troubles that the WWE has had, but that's none of my business.

Now we see the possibility of Brock Lesnar winning over John Cena. If Brock is going to win (and he should) he needs to face the top guy in WWE right now.... That would be Daniel Bryan if he wasn't out, but now that is put back on John Cena. John Cena, in my view, didn't really feel like the top guy a whole lot. Even when he was in his feud with Randy Orton earlier in the year for the world title. I felt like he was taking a different roll, but I guess he was needed again on the top. I'm fine with all of that.. Not the biggest Cena fan in the world, but I can't complain about something that actually makes sense (that is him winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship).

You had eight guys in that ladder match, I don't think there was anyone in that match (besides Cena) that would be a really good fit in the match with Brock. I don't think a lot of people would have been satisfied with Sheamus, ADR, Randy Orton or Kane getting that win. When it comes to Cesaro, Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns getting that win, don't you think those three need a little bit more of experience in that level and more importantly, IMO, to get that experience on the main event level - wouldn't guys like Cesaro, Wyatt and Reigns need some more important and character developing storylines before winning their first world heavyweight championship. The only other reason that I think John Cena winning the title again made sense is because Brock Lesnar needs that "blockbuster" opponent. Again, at this point right now, John Cena is that "blockbuster" opponent. < Just a thought, think about it wrestling fans. Actually to add on, isn't John Cena the guy who just loses in this game of "who becomes champ next"? Do you think WWE didn't want to give the belt to a different person because they knew it would probably hurt them when they lost it. Reigns, Wyatt or Cesaro, if they were to win that ladder match, I bet they would lose at SummerSlam just like John Cena could. Maybe Daniel Bryan would have lost to Brock at SummerSlam and now John Cena is taking his place in the same role.... It's possible...

Whether you cheer for Brock Lesnar and boo John Cena or the other way around, I see it being an enjoyable match to watch.
