Goldust deserves 'Comeback of the Year' Slammy
By Scott Fishman
The categories for the 2013 Slammy Awards have already been announced, but there is one more that should be added.
Other award shows have honorary trophies they present to veteran performers who deserve it. I think this year the Academy of Wrestling Arts and Sciences should recognize Goldust for "Comeback of the Year".
He began the year as an entrant in the 2013 Royal Rumble. The appearance was believe to be a one-night only appearance. However, the son of the "American Dream" found himself back in the mix and part of the storyline involving his brother Cody.
His September match with Randy Orton impressed fans and colleagues alike. Goldust made the most of his Raw main event and showed the same fire that made him one of the top stars in WWE during the 1990s and beyond.
He earned his spot on the roster and began competing with Cody in tag team confrontations. Soon the duo's matches with the Shield and adversaries were stealing the show and highlighting television programs and pay-per-views.
Goldust's hard work paid off, as he became tag team champions with Cody. It was his first taste of WWE gold in more than a decade. Over the last several months the talented performer proved that he was not only as good as he ever was, but maybe even the best he has ever been.
The "Golden One" has one singles and tag titles in numerous promotions, traveled the world and been a part of historic events. Age is but a number and in many ways Goldust is arguably in the prime of his career. He has been the pleasant surprise of 2013.
The superstar has been able to hang with the best in the business. He seems to be in the best shape of his life, moving around as fast as others a little over half his age.
A new generation has been able to enjoy Goldust. At the same time he has earned their respect and adulation all over again. There have been nights where he has gotten one of the biggest reactions from the crowd.
If he challenged for the WWE or wold titles, Goldust would stand as a viable contender. It's something that most may have not considered a remote possibility in today's era. Given the obstacles he has overcome inside the ring and out, his story is an inspiring one.
It's for all these reasons and more that Goldust should be awarded the "Comeback of the Year" Slammy.
